List Mates:

A while back we had a thread going about playing OKOM in schools for
kids. Some folks favoring donation of talent, and others favoring
finding ways to get paid for it.

Just saw page 11 of November's "American Rag". It is a full page ad by
the American Federation of Jazz Societies. Half the page about the
Suncoast Jazz Festival in Clearwater Beach FL, Nov 22-24, 2002. The
other half about AFJS annual meeting at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort on
November 23, which includes a 45 minute presentation about "Presenting
Jazz Concerts to 5th Graders". The sub heading says "Find out how the
jazz society (in Orlando) partners with the Musicians Local by using
Performance Trust Funds to present live jazz to 5th grade students."

The preceding 45 minute presentation is "Jazz Lines To History" by a
Sarasota Jazz Club member. "Hear how Mrs. Roucher developed a jazz
curriculum for 5th grade social studies classes and how it works in the
schools."

Apparently there are a few ways to get this music to the kids if we
think outside the box. Wouldn't it be great if all the jazz clubs and
societies in the world got pro active with the schools like Sarasota and
Orlando?

Cheers,
