And Tony did a most excellent rendition of America the Beautiful -
he sang it straight, as it was originally written. He did go up an octave
on the last note though, but it was done in good taste and, as usual with
him, with "alota class".
BTW, there are movements here in the States to replace ouor Anthem
with either "God Bless America" or "America the Beautiful".

'America the Beautiful' replaces national anthem at game
Tuesday, October 22, 2002

(10-22) 16:16 PDT SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --
Baseball planned to trade "bombs bursting in air" for "amber waves of grain"
at
the World Series Tuesday evening.
Crooner Tony Bennett was scheduled to sing "America the Beautiful" instead
of
"The Star-Spangled Banner" to kick off Game 3 at Pacific Bell Park.
"It's pretty uncommon, it's rare, but it's been done before," Dominic
Balsamo, a
spokesman for Major League Baseball, said of the organization's decision not
to
play the national anthem before the game.
He pointed out that Ray Charles sang "America the Beautiful" to start one of
the
World Series games between the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks
last
year.
Also on the bill Tuesday was Val Diamond, of the long-running San Francisco
musical show "Beach Blanket Babylon," who planned to sing "God Bless
America" in
the 7th inning.
Kind regards,
Bill.
