Creight,
I really did not wish to get involved in this discussion which I
truly believe is rather uncalled for.
We are all aware of the difficulty in singing, playing, or even
humming this tune, very few people are thrilled by its musical content BUT it
IS our National Anthem.
The Russian Anthem "Meadowlands" is a beautiful tune, why don't we
just take it, put some new words to it and be done with it?
The National Anthem of a country, ANY country should be played,
and/or sung EXACTLY the way it was written, using the exact words of the
composer and ADOPTED by the people responsible for such actions
Let Frankie Scoobey Doobey Doo all he wants, let Ella scat anyway
she wishes to any tune she pleases, let Whitney show us how powerful her
lungs are and let Jimi show us how great a Guitar player he is, but let our
National Anthem alone!
The time to have had this discussion was when it was first
introduced, It is not now to be modernized, tempered to the times, or
modified in any manner by anybody for any reason and I cringe when it occurs
because it is, like the flag, one of the symbols of our country and not some
outdated song by Cole Porter!!!
What is next? Will somebody reverse the Stars & Stripes on our
Flag as an artistic expression? After all this IS a free country!!
Best,
Perry
