Hello all,

I'd like to take a moment to say "greetings" to everyone on the list. =
I've been extremely busy and, thus, haven't had the time to make any =
meaningful contributions to the list (with work, school, parenting and =
trying to make some music!!), though I have been reading most of the =
posts. I, too, would like to express my sadness at the passing of Tommy =
Loy. Not long after I joined the list, I stumbled across the lp "A =
Dixieland Riot with the Cell Block 7," at a local used record store, and =
wrote Tommy to tell him how much I enjoyed it. He wrote back telling me =
a bit about his days and experience in that band. He was also kind =
enough to provide some insight on different ways of using numerical =
notation for chord progressions and we both believed that the "Blues =
scale" was a poor and misleading way to teach jazz. Shortly after he =
got back from Edinburgh, we were corresponding to try to bring him to =
Detroit for a concert. I regret that I won't have that opportunity to =
meet him personally. May he rest in peace.

Also, I'd like to announce that my new group, Solar Jazz, will be =
performing a concert of Ellington material on Friday December 6th at =
7:30 p.m. at the Eastpointe Community Center Auditorium on E. Eight =
Mile Rd. between Gratiot and Kelly Rd. for anyone that happens to be in =
the Detroit area. Proceeds will benefit the Arts Council of Eastpointe. =
=20

Besides the standard Ellington fare, I'd like to add some of the earlier =
material. Specifically, I'm looking for lead sheets or small group =
arrangements of Cotton Club Stomp, East St. Louis Toodle-oo, The Mooche =
and Rockin' In Rhythm. If anyone can assist me please contact me =
offlist at rakmccallum@hotmail.com=20

All the best,

Rob McCallum

Eastpointe Jazz Society
