I agree 110% HOWEVER please keep in mind that the majority of
people who go to the festivals today do not know a "story" from a hole in the
ground, and "the story" a brilliant but fading soloist would try to tell
would be completely lost on these "Weekend Jazz Warriors"who are used to
1,000 notes being played a minute!
I had the extreme DIS pleasure of seeing Spiegle perform at a BIX
fest some time ago, I would rather have remembered him from other times.
Now answer this question for me----do you think that the organizers
would suffer financially if, let us say Spiegle.Carl, Hawk etc. were just
introduced to the crowd,. rather then to have them embarrasses themselves and
others by attempting to play?
When an old Boxer is introduced he does not go "a few rounds"
When an old Football star is introduced he does not" give an example of
broken field running"--Why is it different for revered musicians?, WHY MUST
they attempt to do what they can no longer do??
Of course certain exceptions such as WBD, Eubie Blake, Lionel,
and Doc Cheatham etc, come to mind but it must be admitted that they are a
few of the exceptions!!
Hope you are well,
Best
Perry
