I'm rather surprised that no one from this side of the Atlantic has mentioned
it before but a couple of weeks ago Channel 4 TV channel devoted several
hours on a Saturday evening to a run down of the 100 best-selling singles in
the UK since the birth of the official 'Hit Parade' 50 years ago.

The best selling instrumental single, coming in the 40s of the top 100, was
'Stranger On The Shore' written and played by Acker Bilk. It might not be
jazz per se but it's nice to see a jazz musician up there with the likes of
the Rolling Stones, Abba, Elvis Presley and the like. Apparently 'Strangler
on the Floor' was in the charts for something like 55 weeks which is also
something of a record (and I don't mean the round black plastic sort with a
hole in the middle).

Another piece of mindless trivia which with to stun the world.

Cheers,
