The 2002 edition of The Oxford Companion to Music {Oxford University
Press (OUP)} does nothing for jazz. Apart from the 3 1/2 pages allotted
to Jazz itself, no jazz musician is listed in the alphabeticazl format -
no Armstrong, Gillespie, Davis, or Parker - never mind Bix or anyone of
that ilk. There are, of course, pages of information about Beethoven,
Mozart et al. The previous edition of The (New) Oxford Companion to Jazz
(1983) at least had individual entries for Satch, Miles, and Bird (what,
no Diz ?). Obviously it is going to be a long time before jazz becomes
America's Classical Music, as envisioned in the title of Grover Sales's
1984 book.
The OUP offers two hardback jazz books at reduced prices in its current
Holiday Sales Catalog. The first is the The Oxford Companion to Jazz at
$15.95 (list price $25.00) and The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz at
$15.00 (list price $49.95). The first, unlike other Oxford Companions,
is NOT an alphabetical compilation but a collection of essays -- if you
want to know about Benny Goodman you have to plow through 75 entries in
the Index. The other book, a true alphabetized listing, is an update of
Leonard Feather's (and Ira Gitler's) previous Encyclopedias. If you are
interested, go to the OUP web site through Google for more details.
Cheers.
Fred
