Hi Nancy...
You WOULD bring that up!!!
All I can speak for is the success that I'VE had in my years of teaching
beginners.
Easiest instrument I taught was saxophone...already mentioned numerous
times. Drums were always easy for me to teach because I skimmed the cream in
my classes and only kept kids with an acute sense of rhythmic memory AND
sharp reflexes!
I would say, Hm-m-m...to start touring/performing with a Dixieland band as
soon as possible, with a "musical" instrument?? Learn the most used chords
on tenor banjo, and be able to keep a steady beat with all of the right
chord changes...
Or, get a rhythm instrument like the washboard, claves, maracas, etc, and
just play on the beat, not trying to get fancy like ol' you-know-who-whatziz
name!!! :~)

Am I the only one wondering what the querist himself has to say?
After all, he has taught music lessons for many years himself...

... If a friend of yours wants to learn to play in a Dixieland
jazz band, and has never played ANY instrument, and asks you
which one would get him there fastest, what would you tell him/her?
