E.J. Bellocq's wonderful photos of the 'working' girls of New Orleans
Storyville district have rightly become famous and not only for their
possibly risky content. They are superb photographic art and capture an
aspect of the jazz age that otherwise would be lost. 89 of the original
photos survive and will be exhibited in London at the Photographer's
Gallery, Great Newport street, from this Friday to August 3rd. This cache of
photographs was recovered by Lee Friedlander.
A first class story of the collection was published in the Independent
Review of August 12th.
