Listmates: I e-mailed Shirley Mackie, one of America's top clarinettists
and internationally known composer, as follows:
Everyone is raving about this 12 year old clarinetist, though no one ever
mentions his name. Do you know of him? Heard of him? Or heard him? If
not, this programs will be repeated many time on public TV and you might
want to catch it.
Chas
She replied:
I caught the clarinetist and was totally knocked out by his musicianship,
his tone in middle register, his technique, his stage presence. His name:
Julian Bliss. No, I'd never heard of him, and certainly no mention of where
and with whom he studies. And, happy b.d. to him today -- his 13th! Since
Menuhin's school for outstanding youngsters is not far from London, I kept
wondering (as he played) if he is a student there. During the 1960's and
'70's, I knew several faculty and students at that remarkable school.

Nota bene: Miss Mackie is ten times the curmudgeon that I am, has incredibly
high standards to which she holds herself before others. Her IQ is 175 (I
peeked when we were in high school. She plays no jazz, claims not to
understand it, and seldom has any praise at all for classical player,
either. This kid really must be something, as you are all sasying.
