the 'stereotypical roles given to Billie etc. were no big deal. People
have tried to make an awful demeaning thing for billie to play a maid. It
was just a fun hokey movie. Countless other actresses or all enthic
backgrounds have played maids in hundreds of movies and nothing was made of
it. They are only movies after all.
Charlie Beal played a great chorus on "where the Blues were born in New
Orleans", and Mahagony Stomp in that movie...on the soundtrack and the RCA
records put out with that same band. I've always wondered why he wasn't
recorded more.
