One of the greatest of all jazz clarinettists George Lewis had rubber bands
all over his metal clarinet and it didn't seem to make any difference - he
always sounded wonderful. As for reading the dots, George, like Wild Bill
and others, only had to hear a song once to be able to play it for life and
if he didn't know a number could join in as if he did within a few notes of
the first chorus.
