Smokey Stover the Drummer was once the manager of Club 47 in Studio City,
owned by Nappy LaMare, Noni Bernardi and Doc Rando of the old Crosby Band.
He played drums as well there in a house band at times. He moved to San
Francisco and worked at the Hangover Club there. Smokey took in a person he
befriended -- a down and outer -- and that person in turn murdered him.
Smokey was a nice man. His wife, if I recall, was named Pauline and worked
at Club 47 as hostess/waitress.
Smokey was from Coffeyville, Kansas, and he had a brother who taught music
at Michigan "State when I was an undergraduate there in the early '50's.
Mind you, this is a memory fifty years old.
