Dear Perry,
Your "(?)" after Jan Savitt is justified - "Jan Savitt died of a
cerebral hemorrhage Monday (4) in Sacramento, Cal. His death came a few
days after he was stricken while travelling [sic] to a date at Memorial
Aud and his band played the date without him. Savitt was 35". (VARIETY,
October 6, 1948.) Perhaps the fact that he was in transit when he became
ill led to the belief that he died in an auto accident.
"Chippie" Hill was a pedestrian when she was killed--"Bertha 'Chippy'
[sic] Hill, 50...died in New York May 7, after being hit by an
unidentified motorist while crossing a street in Harlem". (VARIETY, May
10, 1950).
Thanks for your suggestion that I should go on line, which I sent to the
University Press of Musississippi. Incidentally, tuberculosis was
probably the most prevalent disease among jazzmen --Freddie Keppard,
Chick Webb, Charlie Christian, Bubber Miley, Jimmy Blanton, Joe
Sullivan, Roy Fox, Charlie Green, and others. All the best.
