Kit and others--
Duck! (We had a logomachy about this a while back . . .)
Now, if you want to start discussing how different kinds of brass basses, sound, now's the time.
For example, bell-front vs. upright ('rain-catcher') bell, tuba vs. helicon, tuba vs. sousaphone (any ophicleide or cimbasso players out there?), aural effect of those who actually practice vs. those who don't (cf. my monograph on the varieties of bad tone), mouthpieces, bits/shanks, differences in tone and intonation in different registers, playing bass-lines and solos in the trombone register, ad nauseum to everyone except tuba-pickers.
    I'm ready.

    Dan

P. S. This might also open up discussions about what kind of clarinet reeds and clarinets sound best, optimal tom-tom use, and a whole gallimaufry of threads too boring to contemplate (except, of course, for fanatics).
