Dear Listers:

There is a myth that pioneer jazzmen lived short lives and died in an =
alcoholic haze. Some of them did, of course, but quite a few lived very =
long lives. I have been looking some of these players up, and found =
some interesting dates. Remember, every one of these people lived =
through World War I, the 1918 Flu Epidemic (which got my paternal =
grandfather), the Great Depression, and World War II.

Here are some Preservation Hall folk:
Percy Humphrey 1905-1995
Willie Humphrey 1900-1994
Jim Robinson 1892-1976
Louis Nelson (the trombonist) 1902-1990
Kid Thomas Valentine 1896-1987
Sweet Emma Barrett 1897-1983
Chester Zardis 1900-1990
Louis Barbarin 1900-1997

Here are some other long-lived vintage jazz players:

Red Norvo 1908-99
Phil Napoleon 1901-1990
Bud Freeman 1906-1991
Doc Cheatham 1905-1997
Bill Challis 1904-1994
Danny Barker 1909-1994
Max Kaminsky 1908-1994
Stephane Grappelli 1908-1997

This list is by no means exhaustive--just a few interesting tidbits.
