As to some bands being fantastic, and others merely proficient, as a
listener, I find that some bands can be fantastic in some venues, and
not in others.  Also with personnel changes or substitutions, sometimes
a single musician can bring an ordinary band up to a great one.

Another observation is that some bands are fantastic both live and in
recording, and others that are terrific live, come off as forgettable on
their recordings.  Perhaps sound systems and engineering can have a
major impact.
