Remembering Louis Brown=85
By Andy "Jazzman" Smith
The Nashville music world and particularly "hot" jazz fans =
mourn the recent death of Louis Brown, 59, from an apparent heart =
attack. Graduated from Peabody College with a degree in music, he was a =
part of the Nashville jazz scene for 40 years.
Louis was an outstanding brass player, especially on =
trombone. He led a big band at Opryland, was a jazz and swing radio =
personality with a show called Crescent Cabaret over WAMB-AM, and may be =
best known as the leader of the Firehouse Jazz Band, playing authentic =
New Orleans and Chicago style jazz. He was an historian of early jazz =
and a researcher of long-forgotten tunes played and recorded by early =
jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and Bix Beiderbecke. He =
was part of a traditional jazz group called the Titan Hot 7 who have =
released several albums, one video, and become one of the most popular =
bands at jazz festivals in the US and abroad.=20
Louis did session work and played and recorded with Chet =
Atkins, Boots Randolph, and many others, and for a number of years was a =
member of Jack Daniels Silver Coronet Band.
On a personal level, I have lost a good friend who played =
the early jazz styles as well as anyone I have ever heard. For the last =
9 years, he led a hot jazz jam session every Sunday that had a very =
devoted group of fans. Quite a few well known players sat in with Louis =
at the Sunday night sessions, held most recently at The Cantina in =
Cummins Station. I filmed most of these weekly sessions and they are a =
"piece of jazz history" in Music City.
He is survived by his wife Leigh and one daughter, Jeanine. =
Louis will be missed.
