Al Levy wrote about Willis Conover (polite snip)
"He was on the air every Friday night - here in NY at least. Just at the
time most of us went to work 7:30 - 9:00. Every working musician I knew
at that time listened to "House Of Sounds" (I may be having a senior
moment but I think that was the name of the show) with Willis Conover."
I think you are right Al. House of Sounds sounds right. He may have left
New York radio around 1954 or so, I'm not sure. Symphony Sid and Al
Collins. Two more wonderful DJs. Remember Sid from the Royal Roost? And
then later from Birdland with Pee Wee Marquette butting in every once in
a while? Oh my, to see all that again.
Also, There was a Jazz Festival in Moscow (Russia) in 2001 honoring him.
Not sure if it is an annual event or not, but many Russian Jazz Musos
(and those from other former Iron Curtain countries) say his Voice of
America shows influenced them
Cheers,
